PERSONALITY:
As a victim of severe mental and physical trauma at the tender age of ten, the young Earl of Phantomhive now lives on for the sake of revenge against his tormentors and to carry out his duty to the Queen as the head of the Phantomhive family. For generations, his family has been serving as the head of a secret organisation that carries out the duty work for the sake of the Crown, and Ciel, despite his youth, is no exception to this task. Better yet, he is also remarkably competent in serving Her Majesty to the fullest extent of his capabilities (as well as his butler's), because he is both an honourable and prideful individual who accepts nothing less than absolute success. He carries out any duty given to him eagerly, determined to uphold the name of his house, even going so far as believing any defeat of the Queen's would be the same as his own.

It's a matter of dignity and loyalty and this mentality extends much further than the Queen. He is also very protective of his relatives, the rare few who consider themselves his friends, the servants he'd allowed into his estate, his fiancée and occasionally his butler. Although, that last one is in rather bad taste seeing as the butler who serves him is no ordinary butler, but a demon bound to him via a contract sealed into Ciel's eye. For the price of his eternal soul, Ciel made the exchange in order to obtain a power stronger than anyone else's—a power he intends to use to seek his revenge against the people who murdered his family, burnt down his home, and defiled his body before attempting to turn him into a human sacrifice for the very demon now contracted to him until the end of his days. Sebastian, as Ciel had named him after he rescued him from his cage and set fire to the place where he had been held captive, is chained down by three important terms of their contract. Firstly, he must protect and never betray Ciel until he exacts his revenge; secondly, he must obey all orders given to him unconditionally; and finally, he must never lie to Ciel. That last one is actually quite interesting considering Ciel lies so often that he's made an art of it, and he's good enough at it that not only does he convince others, but sometimes he even convinces himself. He lies to almost everyone around him, hiding what happened to him years ago when his parents died and putting on the façade of a simple English nobleman.

He doesn't let them see how that month of captivity has haunted him, plagued him with nightmares and a newfound disgust for being touched. He also doesn't let them see how much that same month has hardened him, replacing his previous innocence and naivety with callousness and bitterness. Most of all, he doesn't tell them anything about the black shadow of a man glued to his side and wearing the face of a butler. They don't need to know what they do in the dark of the night, tracking down criminals under the order of the Queen or the lives they've condemned to death for reasons never truly just. Oh no, for them, Ciel only smiles and promises that he's okay because, ultimately, he cares for a lot of the people around him and if his demon is going to drag him down into the depths of hell, they don't need to be dragged along for the ride. He'll make the fall all on his own.

As far as he's concerned, there's no chance at a new life for him. Growing old with a wife and children at his side are nothing but impossibilities. The idea is certainly nice, but he knows that won't be the life he leads. So, along with keeping his fiancée in the dark, it's also important that she always remains at arm's length. Ciel does this for other people as well, refusing to let them get too close and instead seeking solace in the arms of the demon because he's left no room for anyone else at his side. While this is inherently foolish, Ciel is actually startlingly intelligent—most of the time anyway. He's excellent at thinking on his feet, coming up with plans just as he needs them, figuring out the answer behind crimes he's been sent to solve or least how to go about investigating them, when to rely on his own strength or the butler's, and lastly he's capable and smart enough to run a wildly successful company.

Not bad for a 13-year-old boy, no? It's just too bad he's slowly growing more ruthless and cold the longer his butler is around and waging a constant war against his own humanity. The demon wants to break him before devouring him and as a boy with no support system, it's only natural that he's begun to start breaking down.

Although, that's not to say that Ciel has become completely cold and unfeeling. While he's still much more mature than full-grown adults, he still has moments that properly reflect his age and more than enough genuine positive emotions that he hasn't managed to squash just yet. For example, he's still competitive and arrogant to a fault even when challenged to a quick hunting game by his aunt and even goes so far to state "I'm not losing at anything that has 'competition' written all over it". It wasn't until the match was over that he was able to let go of his of temporary animosity towards her. He also gets embarrassed and genuinely happy when he's both praised by a family member and wished a happy birthday.

In sum, there are many facets to Ciel and who he sometimes pretends to be, but only his butler has seen them all.

ETC:
Ciel has a slave branding on his back, a wound that he refuses to allow anyone to see even if it means forgoing bathing. He's really serious about this and unwilling to be in any state of undress unless he's in front of Sebastian. Additionally, he is also contracted to Sebastian via a giant seal embedded into his right eye, which he also keeps hidden from view.

Due to the nature of the contract between Sebastian and himself, Sebastian is constantly at his side to protect and serve him.
